Florida area and Keys [Destination]

Postby AADX »

With great thanks and appreciation to Bob Marsh for his tremendous investment of time, energy and skill to have produced this group of Florida area airports for loyal fans & patrons here to get and enjoy.

These really are something to see.

KEYW_Fl, Key West International Airport, Key West, Florida
KMTH, The Florida Keys Marathon Airport, Marathon, Florida
KORL, Orlando, Florida
KPGD, Punta Gorda, Florida
KSUA-Stuart, Witham Field Airport, Stuart, Florida

I'll be editing this topic to delete all of my preliminary bland screenshots when you all post some much more dramatic and pretty screenshots of these locations. So, please do, explore around, have a look at how they look at night, at sunset, put some throw down on some pretty Florida Tropical airport pictures. Again, a huge thanks and great appreciation to Bob for making this. :)

While some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius.

A question here for Bob.

do you have any particular reasons for the airports you've picked?

Jason: Just noticed that you asked about my FL airport selections. To start with, I did Marathon because you mentioned that it looked like a great sea level testing area with great weather and interesting surroundings. Then, Key West was done because I had posted a sunset screenshot and hammed it up saying that I was flying down there for an evening dinner...and you asked if I had done a Custom Airport for KEYW... so I decided to do that one since it is a short hop down there and one that allows someone to fly down in real time and only spend about 50 minutes or so doing it. That gives you something to do in short stretches that are available for sim flying. Then, the rest were selected because they were GA and Executive commercial airports that were:
1. short distances away from each other (less than 100 miles) for the reason above 2. Small enough to custom build authentically from Google Earth Photos 3. Were not currently populated with authentic taxiways or Taxipaths.
I first built KPGD which had been blown away by a hurricane a couple of years ago and had then been completlely rebuilt using recovery funds... and that gave really nice new buildings to construct and a new layout for taxiways and hanger complexes. Many structures could be used multiple times without many changes. Then I decided to do the Orlando Executive Airport (KORL)....becuse of its interesting GA and FBO areas. Finally I did KSUA because it was also organized the same way with 2 FBO's and lots of interesting buildings.... Most of which can be seen in the ground photos from surrounding highways that are available on Google Earth, and that makes it really easy to make authentic scenery and textures for most of the objects.
And that is about the story of why I selected them. I am always interested in finding airports with interesting features that make for a small project to build, and am open for additional suggestions. I have a set of regional airports in New York and Pennsylvania that are similar...which allows me to take short hops around upper New York State and Pennsylvania. Some are early designs, but the latest ones are quite like the quality of the FL set. I am working on those to bring them up to par for X-Plane 10. I am working on Harrisburg,PA currently.
Best Regards
Bob
